Frequently Asked Questions

What method do you use for grayscale conversion?

We use the luminosity method (0.299 × Red + 0.587 × Green + 0.114 × Blue), which accounts for human eye sensitivity to different colors. Green contributes most to perceived brightness, blue the least. This produces the most natural-looking black and white images.

What's the difference between grayscale and black & white?

In digital imaging, grayscale and black & white often mean the same thing — an image composed of shades of gray from black to white. True "binary" black and white (only two colors) is called "1-bit" or "threshold" images. Our tool produces smooth 256-level grayscale.

Can I batch convert images to grayscale?

Yes. Upload multiple images and they'll all be converted to grayscale simultaneously. Download them individually or use "Download All" to get them all quickly.

Will converting to grayscale reduce file size?

Not necessarily in our tool, since we output at the same quality settings. However, grayscale JPG and WebP files can be compressed more efficiently in general. If you need smaller files, try our image compressor (coming soon).

Can I convert old photos to black and white?

Definitely. Upload any color photo and get a professional grayscale version. This is great for giving photos a classic, timeless look, or for printing in newspapers, books, or documents.
